Guwahati, July 3 Assam Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika on Friday issued a stern warning to fertiliser dealers allegedly forcing farmers to purchase additional products along with urea, saying the state government would take strict legal action against them if the practice continues. The minister, who was speaking at a meeting with officials of the Agriculture Department and fertiliser companies, said that the government had received several complaints from farmers across the state about dealers demanding they buy other items like pesticides, seeds, or even other types of fertilisers along with urea. He added that such practices are illegal and detrimental to the farming community, which is already facing several challenges. Hazarika also mentioned that the government is committed to ensuring that farmers get urea at the government-fixed price without any compulsion. He further stated that the department would conduct regular inspections and raids on fertiliser shops to check for such malpractices. "We will not tolerate any exploitation of our farmers. If any dealer is found forcing farmers to buy extra products, their licenses will be cancelled and they will face severe penalties," he warned. The minister also advised farmers to report any such incidents to the authorities.
